Geophysical Insights Awards the Federal University of Ceará Department of Geology Licenses to New AI Technology
Houston and Ceará, 01 August 2023 – The Department of Geology at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC) obtained a substantial Paradise software license donation (Paradise AI – Big Data Solution for Seismic Interpretation – https://www.geoinsights.com/) from Geophysical Insights. Paradise will be used by students and professors from research groups linked to the Laboratory of Geophysics for Prospecting and Remote Sensing and the Center of Excellence in Petroleum Geophysics at UFC. The new technological resource will contribute to advances in artificial intelligence (AI) studies.
Paradise is used by major higher education institutions worldwide, and in Brazil, UFC is the first institution to obtain a license to the technology. Prof. Karen Leopoldino, with the UFC Department of Geology, had access to the software during her Fulbright scholarship at the University of Oklahoma in the United States.
Professor Leopoldino explains that “the technology will enable research groups to develop studies related to the exploration of energy resources and CO2 storage using powerful AI and Machine Learning (ML) algorithms.” Paradise will be an essential tool for academic research and instruction of undergraduate and graduate students. “With Paradise, students will be able to learn and apply different machine learning algorithms in their subsurface characterization research applied to prospecting and energy storage,” she says.
Professors and students from the Department of Geology can access academic licenses for software widely used in the energy industry. Examples of other software products in use at UFC include Petrel, Paleoscan, Jason, and Interactive Petrophysics.
“UFC is an important teaching and research center in Brazil, and we are delighted to make this investment in their geology program,” says Dr. Tom Smith, President and CEO of Geophysical Insights. “Leading universities have adopted Paradise for geophysics and geology programs, and we look forward to seeing outstanding research from UFC using Paradise and other AI/ML technologies. We welcome Dr. Leopoldiono, her colleagues, and students to the Paradise community.”
About Geophysical Insights
Geophysical Research, LLC (d/b/a Geophysical Insights) was founded in 2008 by Dr. Tom Smith with the vision of applying machine learning methods to geologic interpretation to reduce the risk of exploration and the cost of field development. The mission of the business is to develop the next generation of interpretation tools in an intuitive interface that uses guided ThoughtFlows®, which can be used by all interpreters. Over three years in development, Paradise was released at the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) Annual Convention in 2013 and has been adopted by the International Oil Companies (IOCs) and National Oil Companies (NOCs) and worldwide since its launch. Geophysical Insights continues to build machine learning capabilities in the Paradise workbench, which is proving to reveal deeper insights into the seismic response. Built for large sets of data, Paradise is a ‘Big Data’ solution that easily scales from a single workstation to an enterprise. With adaptive algorithms that learn from the data that are enabled by high-performance computing, interpreters can extract more information from seismic and well data than would otherwise be possible from traditional interpretation tools.
