Lecture – Machine Learning for Engineers: Case Histories in Reserves Calculations and Seeing Depletion in Old Fields
Renowned geoscientist Deborah Sacrey, founder of Auburn Energy and collaborator with Geophysical Insights, will present “Machine Learning for Engineers: Case Histories in Reserves Calculations and Seeing Depletion in Old Fields” during the 67th Anniversary of the Asociación Mexicana de Geofísicos de Exploración (AMGE).
In this special session, taking place on Wednesday, 5 November 2025 at 7:30 PM (CDT), Sacrey will demonstrate how multi-attribute machine learning using Self-Organizing Maps (SOM) can reveal geologic detail hidden below the limits of traditional seismic resolution. Through real-world examples, she will show how this unsupervised learning technique enables interpreters to:
-
Identify thin-bed and lithologic details well below conventional wavelet tuning.
-
Enhance reservoir prediction accuracy by integrating machine learning results with production and petrophysical data.
-
Estimate reserves in both known and exploratory fields with greater confidence.
-
Visualize depletion zones using probability volumes to guide field development and management decisions.
