Augmenting the Geoscientist: Utilizing the power of AI and Machine Learning for Geoscience
Geophysical Insights Product Manager Thomas Chaparro will present at the September meeting of the Geophysical Society of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Association of Petroleum Geologists on Thursday, September 24, 2026. His presentation, “Augmenting the Geoscientist: Utilizing the Power of AI and Machine Learning for Geoscience,” will examine how artificial intelligence and machine learning can support seismic interpretation and reservoir characterization.
Augmenting the Geoscientist
Machine learning and deep learning are giving geoscientists new ways to interpret seismic and well-log data, identify subtle geological features, and manage increasingly complex datasets.
During the presentation, Thomas will introduce workflows within the Paradise® AI workbench, including seismic attribute generation, automated fault detection, and lithofacies prediction using Self-Organizing Maps (SOMs). He will connect these methods to real-world case studies from the Niobrara Formation, West Desert Egypt, and offshore India, demonstrating their application across a range of geological settings.
The session will also look at emerging applications for large language models and agentic AI in geoscience, including their potential roles in interpretation, data quality control, and workflow management. The presentation will focus on practical results such as faster reservoir characterization, improved resolution of thin beds, and more consistent interpretation workflows.

Thomas Chaparro brings a background in computational geophysics to his work at the intersection of seismic interpretation and artificial intelligence. He earned a B.S. in Geology from Northern Arizona University and an M.S. in Geophysics from UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography, where his research focused on computational geophysics and seismic anisotropy.
Before joining Geophysical Insights, Thomas spent three years as a processing geophysicist at DUG, working with 2D and 3D seismic processing and velocity model building on projects spanning the Gulf of Mexico, offshore Africa, the North Sea, offshore Australia, Alaska, and offshore Brazil. He has spent the past six years with Geophysical Insights, including the last three as Product Manager, specializing in training and implementing AI-driven geoscience workflows.
